Designs on a Victorian Front

Scottish Enterprise appointed DWR Architecture in 2010 to carry out survey work and develop a Design Guide for Enhancements to the Victorian Facades in the conservation area of Aboyne in Aberdeenshire. This Design Guide has now been published. Several property owners are planning to apply for grants to assist in the refurbishment of their Shop Fronts in in accordance with the Design Guide and Sketch Designs developed by DWR Architecture. A PDF copy of the Design Guide is available for download here.

Creating big spaces in a small building

A former gardener’s cottage has been re-born as a striking holiday home.

The latest addition to Glen Tanar’s Estate’s holiday letting portfolio is the Garden Cottage. Having worked together on a number of projects, Claire Bruce brought in Duncan Robson of DWR Architecture to develop designs for this property. “Duncan immediately had a very keen sense of the heritage of this building”.
A review on this project has been published in the Scotsman Magazine...read the full article.

Saving energy and cost on property

DWR Architecture has gained accreditation from the Building Research Establishment as an Energy Performance Assessor (EPA) for existing domestic buildings.

DWR Architecture recently completed a feasibility study for a valued client on achievable Energy Improvements Measures & Return On Investment estimates for some of its existing properties.

Three levels of building improvements were evaluated:

  • Minimal low cost improvements including draught proofing and adding loft insulation were estimated to provide a 25% reduction in energy and heating requirements.
  • Additional measures including adding insulation to floors and walls, carrying out improvements to the windows and the heating system could provide a 64% improvement.
  • High level improvement measures including high standards of insulation, replacement high performance windows, heat recovery ventilation system, bio-fuel community boiler, solar heating and solar electric panels could result in a 78% reduction in energy requirements and approximately 90% reduction in carbon emissions.

The improvement specifications and  methods developed as a result of this study will be especially valuable when considering re-modelling, alterations and extensions work to existing properties.
